![]() Who knew using words instead of illustrations could make such a difference? My professor also seemed to think I wasn’t half-bad at it, and strongly encouraged me to pursue screenwriting. (Okay, I’ll admit it: Part of the appeal was that it sounded like a class where I’d get college credit for watching TV.)Īnd the amazing thing about that class was that for the first time I felt like what I put down on the page was exactly like what I’d pictured in my head. So I decided to take a break from my art classes and signed up for a class called “Broadcast Writing and Production” kind of on a whim. I always felt like what came out on the page was never as cool as what was in my head. But eventually, I realized that my hands didn’t draw the way I wanted them to-especially when it came to drawing from my imagination. I wanted to grow up to become a Disney animator (it combined everything I loved: princesses, Disneyland, and art). But my real passion when I was young was drawing. I’d always enjoyed my English classes in school-and I even won a few ribbons in my school’s writing fairs. I get asked all the time if I always knew that I wanted to be a writer-and the answer is strange: No. I’m switching to first-person now because it feels weird to keep talking about myself in third. She lives in Southern California with an embarrassing number of cats.
